Hard at work

Vijay Madan is new DG of UDIAI
The government has appointed Vijay Shankar Madan as the new director general of Unique Identification Authority of India.

The UT cadre IAS officer takes charge after the incumbent RS Sharma was appointed as the chief secretary of Jharkhand, his home cadre.

With Madan's appointment the government believes a new impetus will be given to implement Aadhaar across 16 states.

State of the transparency law
The government has decided to have a 360 degree study of how the right to information law – that most government officials tasked with implementing find to be a pain – has rolled out across the country.

But unlike previous studies that only captured the perspective of the applicants, the government has made sure that the voice of the harassed public information officers doesn’t get drowned.

Except for a handful of departments, senior government officials have designated junior officers as public information officers leaving them to face the music for denial of information.

More work for heavy industries ministry
Few senior officials in the heavy industries ministry now have an additional duty to perform - to try and give feedback on the upgraded version of the Aakash tablet.

The newer range of Aakash is now being manufactured by Rajasthan Electronics and Instruments Ltd.

Its managing director AK Jain has chosen to do the trials within the parent ministry before the product is launched in the next few months.

Paper-pushing babus want anti-graft reports
Babudom is getting its paperwork right before parliament reconvenes in another week.

The department of personnel has sent out a reminder to all ministries to report compliance of the Hota committee recommendations on improving vigilance cases.

Considering that the anti-corruption ‘initiatives’ of the government haven’t really achieved much, the DoPT apparently wants material in black and white to demonstrate that it hasn’t been sitting on its hands.
