UGC new hub for retd HRD officials
The University Grants Commission (UGC) is becoming a hub for retired officials from the HRD ministry. Two senior HRD ministry officials have been appointed as consultants in UGC in the last few months. The appointments have not gone well with UGC officials who saw it as the direct interference of the government and believed that it undermined the autonomy of the UGC.
Govt to forgo consultation with CVC in corruption cases
To fast track action against corruption officials, the government has decided to dispense with second stage consultation with the Central Vigilance Commission in corruption cases. The government has asked CVC and government departments to change vigilance manuals to remove the mandatory requirement. A group of ministers has taken the decision based on the recommendation of Hota Committee on Vigilance Issues.
No extention for Mauskar, to miss UN climate conference
India will have an inexperienced team at the UN climate conference at Durban this year. Senior-most negotiator and special secretary in environment ministry, JM Mauskar, retired in October. The government did not grant him extension despite the best efforts of environment minister Jayanthi Natarajan. Mauskar had been part of the Indian climate team for the last five years, the period during which other experienced negotiaters such as former environment secretary Pradipto Ghosh were axed from the team. For the last one year, Mauskar had been the pillar of the climate team and many members of the team said his absence would be felt at Durban.
