Dishing out a sugar-coated pill to agitating Jats, the Haryana Backward Classes Commission has recommended 10% reservation in state government jobs for five castes — Jats, Jat Sikhs, Rors, Tyagis and Bishnois — under a special backward class category.

This would be in addition to the 27% seats reserved for the backward classes.

The panel’s recommendations may not, however, stand legal scrutiny as the Supreme Court in 1992 held that reservations in public employment should not exceed 50%.

Chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda did not commit himself to a date of implementation. The Haryana government already provides a 20% quota in jobs to the scheduled castes.
