A section of teachers at Jamia Millia Islamia have come out in support of Vice-Chancellor Mushirul Hasan over the issue of faculty appointments for the AJK Mass Communication Research Centre (MCRC) and the newly set up dental institute at the varsity.

The reaction comes in wake of a report carried by HT on May 26 on the internal debate over the veracity of the appointments.

Hasan, whose term expires in 13 days, had fixed meetings of the selection committees on April 8, 9 and 20 to finalise 22 appointments for the MCRC and the dental institute.

According to an HRD Ministry order dated July 19, 2004, heads/chairmen of autonomous bodies should not initiate any selections and promotions “two-three months before the expiry of their term or retirement”.

In a rejoinder to the article (Jamia VC Under Fire), 22 faculty members, including deans of various faculties and directors of different research centres, have justified the appointments stating that they have been made in “accordance with University statutes” and “approved by the University’s Executive Council” and never been contested.

Responding to issue of Hasan naming a building after his father Professor Mohibbul Hasan during his own tenure, the rejoinder states: “Mohibbul Hasan was the first professor appointed in the department of History and was in every sense its founding father.

“The proposal to name the building after him came from the Department of History and was put forward by the Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Languages in a meeting of the Academic Council dated April 11, 2007. The matter was discussed in the 100-strong Academic Council and the proposal was unanimously approved.
