A 19-year-old newspaper hawker and his associates were on Saturday arrested for stealing mobile phones of their clients while delivering newspapers at their houses.
The police also apprehended two juvenile members of the gang and recovered 16 mobile phones from their possession, said a senior police officer.
The accused have been identified as Roshan Pandey alias Rahul, the alleged gang leader, and his associate Saurabh Sharma, 20.
Pandey distributed newspapers in Lado Sarai area along with his father and also engaged his friends in this business. They mingled with the residents and looked out for soft targets.
After stealing the mobile phones, they sold them at cheap rates.
Chhaya Sharma, deputy commissioner of police (south), said the arrests came after investigation into a case of theft at the house of one Nitish Kumar in Lado Sarai area from where thieves took away three mobile phones, an ATM Card and other valuables during morning hours.
During investigation, Sharma said, it came to light that a gang was active in theft of mobile phones, especially in morning hours.
A team led by Ritu Raj, SHO of Saket police station, got cracking and nabbed Pandey with a stolen mobile phone.
"His interrogation led to the arrest of his associate Sharma and apprehension of the two juvenile members of the gang. They told us that they stole mobile phones to meet their expenses of alcohol and drugs. The gang used juveniles so that nobody could get suspicious about their activities," added Sharma.
