The Delhi high court Monday dismissed the bail pleas of five corporate honchos charge-sheeted in the 2G scam and in Tihar jail since April 20. The court, while arguing that they might tamper with evidence and influence witnesses, wondered why the CBI didn’t arrest them earlier.
The five are Unitech MD Sanjay Chandra, DB Realty MD Vinod Goenka and top executives of Reliance ADAG group — Gautam Doshi, S Pipara and Hari Nair.
Justice Ajit Bharihoke said in his order that this gave an insight into the influence wielded by the corporate bosses, who moved the high court after special judge OP Saini rejected their bail pleas.
All of them have been accused of cheating, criminal conspiracy and forgery.
The CBI alleged they conspired with former telecom minister A Raja and department of telecom officials to get 2G licences and spectrum at throwaway prices through various illegal means. Monday’s order, experts said, did not augur well for another 2G case accused, Kanimozhi, daughter of DMK supremo M Karunanidhi. Her bail plea is likely to be heard on Tuesday.
Another accused, Cineyug Films director Karim Morani, too, was denied bail by special judge Saini, who said "coercive process" would be applied if he failed to appear before him on Tuesday.
