B Sc Honours in Biomedical Sciences is an immensely popular course for students intending to pursue research in health sciences and related areas.
The course was first started in Acharya Narendra Dev college in 1999 and later in Bhaskaracharya and Rajguru colleges of Applied Sciences. The curriculum has been designed to give focused, in-depth grounding in the essential elements of both the biological and chemical sciences. Classical subjects like Biochemistry, Physiology, Cell biology, statistics organic and chemistry are taught together with applied fields like immunology, biophysics, biotechnology, pharmacy and pythology.
Rule out rote
The admission to this course is essentially through an entrance examination consisting of Multiple Choice Questions. The preparation would require the students to revise class XII level Physics, Chemistry, Biology and logical ability questions as part of syllabus for the entrance.
A strong inclination to do research and an inherent interest in biological sciences is what would make a student successful in this field.
The custom of BMS is to stress on collaborative learning and close interactions. Students are discouraged from rote-learning and discussions are the mainstay of interactions.
Regular assignments, presentations and seminars summer project works are mandatory for each student. These help in the improvement of oral and written expression and often convert the shy to confident orators. The ambience lays thrust is on peer learning and working in collaborative teams. Great emphasis is laid on hands-on training rather than mere demonstrations during the practical classes.

In addition to regular theory and practical the course has an inbuilt summer project at the end of second year when students go to work in the best research laboratories across the country and get to work with top scientists in frontier areas of biological science. This research experience helps them make informed decisions in their career.
Students after completing B.Sc. (Hons) Biomedical Sciences become eligible for M Sc and/or integrated PhD degree programmes in biomedical sciences, biotechnology, genetics bioinformatics.
Apart from these, potential employment avenues span a wide range of institutions that interface knowledge of medicine, biotechnology, microbiology, toxicology, pharmacology, and other allied fields also open up after completing this course.
Training in environmental toxicology and physiology provides the base to become consultants/pollution inspectors.
Students could even turn entrepreneurs and venture to establish a biotechnology unit or a research lab.
Excellent placement of students of past six batches speaks volumes about the training students in this course—they are admitted to the best institutes in India S, and abroad.
