For Delhiites who love to escape the Capital for a short trip, this month is the perfect time to do so. The weather is not harsh and there are at least two extended weekends in August, thanks to Eid falling on a Friday and Independence Day next Thursday.
Though Delhiites usually prefer to hit the hills for such short trips, a large number of travellers are instead opting for the plains this time due to the recent Uttarakhand floods.
“There are very few enquires for hill stations despite extended weekends this month as people are afraid to visit hills fearing a recurrence of floods,” said Rajji Rai of the Travel Agents Association of India.
“Despite providing huge discounts in room tariff, hotels are empty. Rajasthan is the hotspot now and many are even visiting friends or relatives in nearby cities,” he said.
“There is huge spike in the number of people reading reviews of nearby tourist destinations in the last one week,” said Nikhil Ganju, country manager, TripAdvisor, an international travel site. “Most travellers are opting for boutique resorts or hotels for a trip during the extended weekends. People prefer destinations that doesn’t require more than six hours by a car to reach,” he said.
According to TripAdvisor, the most read reviews are that of boutique resorts or standalone properties in Rajasthan, including Tree of Life Resort and Spa and Samode Palace near Jaipur, Rajasthan. Many people are opting for resorts in nearby Haryana too, such as Tikli Bottom in Gurgaon.
“After the Uttrakhand calamity, hill stations have seen a dip this year for sure and that has gone in favour of destinations such as Rajasthan, which is quickly filling up for long weekends in August,” said Vikram Malhi, GM, South and Southeast Asia of online travel company Expedia. “A lot of travellers are going to Ranthambore, Udaipur and Jaisalmer.”
Malhi said that generally, Indian travelers have been taking more of shorter, frequent holidays instead of one or two long vacations. “Mostly couples with no kids and singles utilise these weekends to its best. By taking just a day off from their offices, they are able to rejuvenate themselves and have a good time with their partners and friends,” he said.
