The company fixing high security number plates (HSRP) on new vehicles is in a fix. Plates are piling up in its godowns. As per the Supreme Court order, the onus of getting the plates fixed on any vehicle sold after October 31 lies on the automobile dealer.

While the majority of private vehicles rolling out of showrooms have the new plates, transport department officials said the dealers selling commercial vehicles continue to violate Supreme Court's directions.

Of the backlog of 90,000 HSRP plates lying in the godowns, more than 10,000 are commercial. The centres that fix number plates for private vehicles are 13 and are spread across the city. But only one centre has been authorised for commercial vehicles by the transport department, that too in Burari.

"Though the number of registration plates of cars and two-wheelers is more, we are clearing the backlog quickly. But the stock of commercial number plates is only growing," said an official of Rosemerta Technologies Limited, the agency responsible for installing these number plates. "Once a commercial vehicle is handed over to the transport operator, it never comes back to us," he added.

After the Supreme Court orders, the HSRP was made mandatory on all new vehicles registered after April 30, 2012. Initially, it was the customer's responsibility to get the plates fixed on his vehicle, but the court directed the automobile dealers not to deliver new vehicles without these plates.

To clear its backlog of private number plates, the company has now started a system where owners can fix appointments online (www.hsrpdelhi.com) as per his convenience.
