A 20-year-old hotel management student working for an airline catering service lost his fingers after his hand got stuck in a grinder while working at the kitchen.

The man, who is employed by TajSATS Air Catering at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), was working at the kitchen on Sunday morning when the incident happened.

TajSATS provides catering services to many airlines operating from IGI airport.

Sources at the airport said that he was grinding cashew nuts when the freak accident happened.

He was immediately rushed to the Indian Spinal Injury Centre near the airport.

He is admitted under Dr Ritabh Mittal, trauma surgeon at ISIC with four amputated fingers caused by a crush injury. “He was brought to us on Sunday and was operated the same day,” said Mittal.

Dr. C. Sobti, plastic surgeon at ISIC, and Dr Mittal operated on him to control the damage.

“He is recovering well," said Dr H.S. Chabbra, medical director, ISIC.
