Three unidentified assailants allegedly barged into a 35-year-old housewife’s east Delhi home and held her hostage at gunpoint with her one-year-old son before fleeing away with cash and valuables worth lakhs on Friday morning. “The incident took place in Mandawali’s Gurdwara Mohalla at 9am.

The victim has been identified as Nisha. The assailants barged into her home, brandished country-made weapons and demanded the keys to her cupboards,” said a senior police officer.

When she refused, the men held her son at gunpoint. “It was only then that Nisha handed them the keys,” said the officer. According to the police, the assailants took away R40,000 in cash and jewellery worth lakhs. The incident occurred a day after her husband Mohammad Sajid, who works in a private company, went to Kanpur on a business trip.

“We suspect the involvement of the couple’s tenants. They have been missing since the incident came to light,” the officer said. The family had recently let out a room to a young couple without getting them verified. “Nisha told us that she had seen the female tenant talking on the phone minutes before the incident occurred. A case has been registered at the Mandawali police station. Efforts to trace the missing tenants are on,” the officer added.
