There are winners, and then there are the Nobel winners. So when the Nobel peace prize goes to imprisoned Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo, China fumes, and the world sits up to take note of Chinese intolerance.
For those who can’t get enough of the fuss over the million dollar prize, the Embassy of Sweden — the country of the Nobel’s origin — is ready to share a piece of the ‘action’ with a flurry of activities at the week-long Nobel memorial week. Begin with the Indo-Swedish fusion jazz band Mynta at IIT Delhi today and graduate to the opera performance by tenor Mats Carlsson next weekend.
Also, turns out that the Nobel diploma handed out at the ceremony is quite a big deal — “a unique work of art designed by Swedish calligraphers, on specially ordered handmade paper”. Swedish artist Annika Rucker and art historian Oscar Aschan will reveal more of that on Wednesday. If all that is enough to work up a ‘Nobel’ appetite, consider making a date with Nobel chef Mark Phoenix at the Olive Beach restaurant. Food aside, Phoenix is certain to have stories about how the big dinner has become one of its best kept secrets. Can’t get any closer to the Real McCoy, can it?
