Wife of jailed rights activist Binayak Sen and noted lawyer Prashant Bhushan on Monday said the court, which convicted Sen for sedition without evidence, had conducted the trial like a “kangaroo court” and called for the removal of the judge.

Illina Sen also spoke about her concerns about her family’s safety at her first press conference but pledged to continue fighting for Sen and other civil rights activists’ release.

“I want to live…I am now really worried about my family’s safety…If I don’t feel safe any more, I might as well take political asylum in some other country,” she said at the Press Club of India on Monday as her two daughters listened to her.

The only recourse that seems to be available, she said, is to walk into some embassy of liberal democracy and ask for political asylum.

She would approach the high court but her faith in the Indian judicial system had been shaken, she added.

Lawyer Prashant Bhushan said the very nature of the judgement was “absurd”, the mindset of the judge was “fascist” and should be removed by the high court for displaying a non-judicial mind.
