Taking complete responsibility for BJP’s poor show in the Delhi Assembly elections, Kiran Bedi thanked the party leaders for showing faith in her leadership. “I want to thank the BJP leaders who inspired me to join and take up the CM candidature. The party didn’t ask me for money and accepted me the way I am. Top leaders including Narendra Modi, Amit Shah trusted my leadership qualities. I am thankful to them,” said Bedi while addressing the media in front of her house after her defeat.
“I had done many road shows and visited 48 constituencies. Even in Krishna Nagar the sanitation was poor and had I won the elections, I would have worked to organise cleanliness drives,” said Bedi who lost from the Krishna Nagar constituency.
She talked to HT about her future plans. Excerpts :
Will you be working in the Krishna Nagar constituency?
I am a defeated candidate and won’t interfere in another person’s work.
What is your view about Kejriwal’s performance?
I am giving full marks to Kejriwal. He came so far after five years of hard work. He actually reached the urban poor and raised his voice against corruption and for introducing the Lokpal Bill. I am sure in the future Kejriwal and his team will fulfill all their promises. They would work for training unemployed youths, providing houses in place of jhuggis , schools for poor children, teachers in government school. It is important that the Kejriwal government should get a survey done and ensure that no new encroachments are made in Delhi.
According to you, who is responsible for the defeat?
I haven’t lost the elections and as a party worker I have given my best. As far as the party is concerned, it is upto them to introspect the reason for the loss.
Do you regret joining the BJP?
I don’t regret my decision of joining the party and fighting for the CM’s seat and have no plans to leave the party. I am a BJP worker and will continue to do the work I would be asked by party leaders.
Do you think the BJP losing Delhi elections is a referendum on Modi’s government?
No. Not at all. BJP’s loss in Delhi is not the Modi government’s defeat. The party fought the elections under my leadership as a chief ministerial candidate, so I am taking full responsibility for this loss.
Do you think the party leaders were over confident about the victory?
As I said it is for the party to introspect and find out the reasons behind losing elections in Delhi.
There were rumours that the party cadre did not support you?
That is completely wrong. I received full support from cadre and there were no differences among the leaders.
What’s your future plan?
I will work with dedication for the BJP.
Did BJP ‘gag’ its CM candidate?
At no point of time was I restricted to talk to the media. In fact the media had spread wrong information among people, which is not done.
