The Doppler Weather Radar will be installed at the IGI airport by April-end, civil aviation minister Praful Patel said in Parliament on Tuesday.
“DWR is operated in 24x7 mode and provides velocity and spectrum width data, in addition to reflectivity obtained from conventional radars. Radial velocity data of weather systems provides better insight into the dynamics of weather systems,” he said.
“It gives better quantitative rainfall estimates by suppressing ground clutter and anomalous propagation,” he said.
The cost of this equipment is Rs 10 crore with an additional expenditure of Rs 6 crore towards development of infrastructure to set up the system.
