Students of Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad will soon be studying about the management skills and success mantra of the Delhi education department.
Encouraged by the vast improvement in results and infrastructure of government schools in Delhi, IIM Ahmedabad has decide to take it up as a case study.
“The most important means of study at IIM Ahmedabad are case studies taken from real life. We were keen to find out the various factors by which a government department could improve results and enrollments,” said Professor Sanjay Verma of IIM Ahmedabad.
Verma, along with colleague Prof Rajiv Sharma visited the education department and met with officials, principals and teachers.
“We chose the Delhi government’s education department because they have undertaken lots of interesting and successful initiatives. For the first time we were happy to see a total change in the thought process,” said Verma.
“The department has taken into consideration the requirements of all stakeholders – teachers, students and parents – and looked at improving the overall learning process,” he said.
The case study, a part of IIM Ahmedabad’s Centre for Innovation in Education, is distinctive and not a critic.
“We won’t be analysing how far the initiatives have been successful and what the shortfalls are. Rather, we will look at what has worked and see if others can implement that,” said Verma.
The department has had education officials from other states knocking at its doors. “We have had delegations from Assam, Pondicherry, Rajasthan and Bihar. They want to know what we are doing right and see if they can follow the same policies,” said Rina Ray, Education Secretary.
The pass percentage of Class XII students in government schools went up 78.07 per cent in 2006 to 85.70 per cent in 2008. The department is also spending on improving school infrastructure. In 2007, it spent Rs 2.5 lakh on Building As Learning Aid (BALA), which entailed brightly painted school buildings.
