Starting tomorrow, you are likely to face problems in cellphone connectivity.

With the deadline for operators to get their illegal towers regularised expiring last week, the MCD will, from Wednesday, begin sealing illegal towers that haven’t been regularised.

At a meeting of the officials concerned of the civic body today, it was decided that at least 60 towers—five each in all the city’s 12 municipal zones—would be sealed this week

The modalities of the process are yet to be worked out.

The MCD officials had earlier said that out of 5,364 towers in the city, 1,532 are illegal, as they had not taken permission from the civic agency to set them up. The civic body has already sealed 300 illegal towers and given several deadlines to operators to apply for regularisation in keeping with new guidelines approved recently. On February 9, the MCD had announced a new policy.

The final deadline for the same expired on Friday.

According to the revised guidelines, the amount payable by the service providers to MCD to instal a tower has been increased from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh. A number of operators are now unwilling to pay the hiked installation charge.
