In a freak accident, a 75-year-old man was killed when a broken-down minibus gained speed while people were pushing it and knocked down the senior citizen, police said. The incident was reported from Kalkaji in southeast Delhi on Thursday evening, police said.
The victim identified as M C Das — a resident of Aravalli Apartments in Kalkaji, out for an evening stroll — was crossing the road when the incident took place around 6 pm.
Police said the minibus had broken down near DDA Flats in the evening. “When the driver asked for help, some passengers helped him push-start the vehicle. That’s when the vehicle’s engine came to life and the bus picked up speed,” a senior police officer, not authorized to speak to the media, said on the condition of anonymity.
Police said Das failed to gauge the vehicle’s speed and was knocked down, police said.
He was taken to All India Institute of Medical Sciences Trauma Centre where he was declared dead on arrival.
Police said they have registered a case of rash and negligent driving and death due to negligence at the Kalkaji police station. The driver fled from the scene and the police have impounded the minibus.
“We have registered a case and a hunt is on to nab the driver,” the officer said.
