Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) — which has been investigating since eleven years the larger conspiracy behind the assassination of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1991 May — is expected to seek permission of the Sri Lankan authorities to grill Kumaran Padmanathan alias KP. He was the new chief of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Ealam (LTTE).

The questioning of KP is required since he had allegedly played a role in financing and providing arms, explosives and communication equipments to the Rajiv’s killers, said a senior Ministry of Home Affairs official on the condition of anonymity.

It was KP who had also provided the RDX-and- C 4-based suicide vest worn by the suicide bomber Dhanu and the AK-47 pistol and a Czech 9 mm pistol possessed by Sivarasan," the offcial said.
