India Inc is facing a severe shortage of skilled manpower as the undergraduates in the general stream of arts, commerce and science churned out by the country's educational institutions are not up to the mark, reveals a survey.
"Employability quotient of the undergraduates in India reveals this unsettling reality that GenNext is woefully short of soft skills and vocational training to take on the responsibilities of corporate sector management," said the survey, conducted by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry and CVoter.
The survey on employability quotient of undergraduates in India found that only three out of 10 respondents were satisfied with their fresh recruits in the past one year.
New undergraduates lack reliability, integrity, self motivation, self discipline and empathy for other workers and management, they said.
90% of the respondents believe that self discipline is a strong attribute employees must possess, while 60% said that their present employees are self-disciplined.
50% of the respondents felt that their present crop of employees are self motivated, an attribute that 90% of them consider important at the workplace.
Out of 10, eight respondents felt that ability to design a process to meet desired results is an important skill-set that their employees must have while only six out of them felt that their employees had it.
About 83% of the respondents acknowledged the need for good written communication as a key skill for performing the job. However, only about 60% felt that their present employees have the desired skill.
Asked about the "willingness to learn", almost all the respondents considered a must-have quality for their employees.
