The leader of a gang of interstate gunrunners and his associate were arrested and a large consignment of sophisticated illegal arms and ammunition were recovered from their possession, the crime branch said on Sunday.

Identified as one Saurabh, 24, from Ghaziabad’s Masuri and his Delhi-based associate Vinay Pawar, 23, the duo was trying to smuggle a 9 MM carbine machine gun, eight pistols, a revolver and as many as 38 live cartridges into the capital, said SBS Tyagi, DCP (crime and railways).

“A few days ago, we had received a secret input that a gang headed by Saurabh, who is involved in the sale and supply of illegal sophisticated weapon in Delhi and the NCR after procuring the same from eastern UP and Bihar’s Munger, would try to smuggle some of these to criminals active in the capital,: said DCP Tyagi.

According to police, on February 23, specific information was received that Saurabh and his associate would come near the Hasanpur depot in east Delhi aboard a car to deliver a consignment of illegal weapons to the local conduit of a gangster.

Accordingly, police claimed, a trap was laid and, at about 2:35 pm, two men later identified as the accused duo and travelling aboard a Maruti were stopped and overpowered after a brief scuffle.

“Their interrogation revealed that this gang was being headed by Saurabh and had been involved in the trade of weapons for the last two years.

"They admitted to have supplied more than 50 sophisticated weapons to various persons, including gangsters, during the period,” DCP Tyagi said.

Police claimed the duo told them that they used to procure these weapons from various suppliers who brought these from Munger.

“Various gangsters and criminals based in Delhi and the NCR were in touch with the gang for fulfilling their demands of sophisticated weapons and efforts are being made to identify them,” DCP Tyagi added.
