Two couples will work side-by-side at the newly formed corporations. Congress’ Meghraj Chandila and Meenakshi Chandila and INLD’s Krishan and wife Neelam have won the elections in South Delhi Corporations.
Krishan, who is an accused in four criminal cases, beat Congress bigwig and leader of Opposition in MCD, Jai Kishan Sharma, to score a comfortable victory from Najafgarh. His wife Neelam, an MA (English) from Agra, won from the adjoining Dichaun Kalan. Both are first-time councillors.
Krishan is from Dhichaun Kalan but since the seat was reserved for women, his wife contested from that ward while he chose Najafgarh which was considered to be Sharma’s turf.
In another part of South Delhi, Meghraj from Vishnu Garden ward won by 2,300 votes while his wife Neelam representing the Khaya ward won 6,300 votes. “It has been a joint effort. Earlier, I used to represent Khyala so people voted for both of us there,” he says.
Son of a former MLA, Meghraj said one of the biggest challenges this year has been to fight against money power.
