Italy on Friday called back its ambassador to India for "consultations" after a murder chargesheet was filed against two Italian marines for the killing of two Indian fishermen off the Kerala coast on February 15.
Official sources confirmed Italian envoy Giacomo Sanfelice's recall. The Italian foreign ministry said Sanfelice's recall was in the context of the "developments in the situation in Kerala".
The announcement came hours after the Kerala Police charged the two marines - Latore Massimiliano and Salvatore Girone - of killing the fishermen. The marines claim they mistook them for pirates.
Italy says the incident took place in international waters and wants the marines to be tried in their country.
