After at least a dozen cases of civic body employees and councillors getting roughed up by the public have come up, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has asked the Delhi police chief for protection.

The civic body on Monday requested commissioner B.K. Gupta to provide police protection and bodyguards to councillors and employees whenever there are apprehensions of trouble. At present, councillors and employees get police protection during demolition action.

In December, three MCD councillors were manhandled. The chairman of works committee, Jagdish Mamgain, who wrote the letter, has expressed concern over the attacks and said there was a feeling of insecurity amongst employees and councillors.

Mamgain said the civic body has to act against illegal constructions, encroachments, illegal parking and hoardings, which often invite trouble for the staff conducting the drive.

"There have been cases of employees getting roughed up for the restoration of law and welfare of the people. The councillors, being elected representatives, are involved in the welfare and service of the people. Therefore, it is the duty of the police to protect the councillors and their family," he said.

Mamgain said police arrangement should be made during the councillor's rounds and other functions of MCD works.
