A day after a report by a Supreme Court-appointed lawyer concluded that there were grounds to proceed against Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi in the 2002 anti-Muslim riots, the Congress on Tuesday asked the BJP to dump him.

"The party, which has been talking of Ram Mandir and Ram Rajya for the last so many years should also follow the ideals shown by Rama. Lord Rama had deserted his wife Sita just to clear the doubts of people," Congress spokesman Rashid Alvi said.

"Questions are being raised about Modi for the last ten years and none of the organisations such as NHRC and Minority Commission has so far given a clean chit to him. Even BJP's allies have been raising questions about him."

He said the BJP had been trying to avoid questions on Modi for years.

Differing with SIT's clean chit, the SC-appointed amicus curiae had on Monday held that Modi could be prosecuted for offences under IPC in the post-Godhra riots of 2002 for "promoting enmity among different groups".

Alvi, however, avoided questions on SIT's findings or on whether the Congress would appeal against its closure report. "The job of an investigation agency is to carry out investigation. The verdict has to come from the court," he said.
