After facing perennial traffic chaos for the past four months, the residents of west Delhi heaved a sigh of relief on Thursday with the partial re-opening of Janak Setu.

One carriageway of the bridge that connects west Delhi with Delhi Cantonment area was opened on Thursday morning for cars and two wheelers.

“We would allow light vehicles to ply from Janakpuri towards Delhi Cantonment on the carriageway between 7am and 4pm. Similarly, traffic on the opposite direction will be allowed to ply on Janak Setu between 4pm and 11pm. For the rest of the night, cars and two wheelers will be allowed to ply on both the directions," said Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (traffic).

However, heavy vehicles will not be allowed to ply on the bridge, he said.

Municipal Corporation of Delhi, however, was not happy with the opening of the Setu, without its consent. It was learnt from sources that Congress MP Mahabal Mishra along with his men had gathered at the Setu, removed the barricades and forcibly opened the Setu on Thursday morning.

“The work at the Setu has not yet been completed by the corporation. The Setu has been opened prematurely by Mishra without consulting the officers,” said an MCD official.

The Traffic Police have been deployed to check the entry of heavy vehicles on the carriageway. Signages for the new traffic circulation plan also are being put up, said officials.
