The Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa's plea to defer her appearance before a Bangalore trial court hearing the corruption case against her. The court also directed her to appear on Thursday for recording her statement.

A bench of justice Dalveer Bhandari and justice Dipak Misra brushed aside Jayalalitha's apprehensions over "inadequate security" measures undertaken by the Karnataka government. "You are a public figure. How can you remain away from people?" the bench observed.

Jayalalithaa had claimed that the state had failed to provide sufficient security on the court premises, located at a central prison. Her counsel claimed the special court was 65 km from the airport and this made her vulnerable.

The court's direction came after the state government assured SC over the security arrangements made for Jaylalithaa's appearance before the trial court.

The bench also turned down Jayalalithaa's plea to shift the venue of her trial closer to the airport. Subsequent to Karnataka government's submission, the bench asked Jayaylalithaa's counsel: "What more do you want? The helipad has been prepared. Once the hearing is over, fly back home."

Jayalalithaa's advocate submitted that she was "under a threat perception" and hence sought a postponement. In response, the court said: "Please be reasonable. We are also concerned about security. After these affidavits and the Supreme Court's directions, there cannot be any fears."
