Environment minister Jayanthi Natarajan on Monday said that she will take up the issue of National Investment Board (NIB) with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to safeguards interests of environment.
Speaking to reporters, the minister said she has already written to the PM objecting to NIB, which would be empowered to give speedy clearances to mega projects by vesting statutory powers to give clearances with itself.
"We will speak to the Prime Minister about the reservations we have on the issue. Whatever I have to say, I will say in the Cabinet," he said, adding that she will protect interests of environment.
In a letter to the Prime Minister, Natarajan had said that the manner in which changes have been sought on the issue of granting project approvals was distributing and she wondered why NIB should step in when the decisions like green clearances are vested with her ministry.
Finance minister P Chidambaram had proposed NIB to overcome delay because of clearances in initiating mega infrastructure projects.
