Indian students wishing to apply to some of the finest English departments, will not have to look too far away from home.
For, among the top 100 universities in the world leading in English education, is the English department of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).
In a survey conducted by QS World University Rankings, the Centre for English Studies (CES) has been ranked as among the top 100 English departments in the world.
While the likes of Harvard University, University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, University of California (Berkeley) and Yale University have made it to the top five, the faculty at JNU feel that this ranking speaks volumes of the institute’s stature.
“Apart from some IIT departments, no Indian department across all disciplines has been ranked higher than this,” said Saugata Bhaduri, chairperson, Centre for English Studies, JNU.
“It is truly a matter of immense pride that an Indian university department, namely the Centre for English Studies at JNU has achieved this tremendous recognition of being adjudged as one of the top 100 English departments in the world,” Bhaduri added.
The English department has been ranked between the 51 to 100 range, with academics and employer rankings set at 26.2 and 19.9, on a scale of 100.
