NEW DELHI: Students of Jawaharlal Nehru University protested against a University Grant Commission’s order that 27% OBC reservation is applicable only for the post of assistant professor.
The students, led by students’ body president Kanhaiya Kumar, are demanding that reservation should also be extended to posts of professor and associate professor level.
Students met UGC officials and submitted a memorandum.
In a recent letter to the Registrar of Universities, the UGC said that there had been no change in the reservation policy in faculty positions in central universities.
In the letter, UGC had said that in teaching positions reservation for SCs (15 per cent), STs (7.5 per cent) is applicable at all three levels, assistant professor, associate professor and professor.
But in case of OBCs, the 27 per cent reservation is applicable only at the level of assistant professor.
“We students cannot tolerate this game with education and social justice. All the teachers, clerks and students will be on the road to protest against this. And if the government does not listen to our demands, then they will be ones who’ll eventually come on the road,” said JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar.
