Armed with slogans and fuelled by anger, close to 1,000 students poured out on to the India Gate lawns to defend the unique character of their elections, which were earlier scheduled to be held on Monday. Meanwhile there were no classes held on campus as the university observed a complete strike.

The demonstration, however, got on to a shaky start as the Delhi Police randomly detained close to 40 students. Undeterred, the other students formed a human chain and shouted slogans — “Lyngdoh is not logical, the struggle is ideological” “Lyngdoh committee go back” — that denounced the attempt at “curbing the democratic rights of the students.

“It’s not about rejecting the Supreme Court’s order, but about upholding the best format of students union elections in the country. We are keen on conducting our polls as per our constitution, which is in consonance with the spirit of Lyngdoh Committee recommendations,” said Sandeep Singh, President, Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU), which was reinstated after the Election Committee's resignation on October 24. The union’s term has been extended by three months.

Some intense negotiation with police officers for the release of detained students and an hour of sloganeering later, the gathered crowd was arrested en masse and detained for two hours at the Parliament police station.

CPI (M) politburo member Sitaram Yechury addressed students here to express his solidarity with their struggle.

The next date of hearing at the Supreme Court is scheduled for December 8.
