Fifty-year-old Basu Deo Kaushal worked as a project manager with an export company in Delhi but on Friday he was arrested while attempting to rob a senior citizen in her house.

Kaushal lost his job last year due to the economic slowdown and robbing senior citizens in Saket, where he lives with his family, seemed like the easiest way to earn some quick bucks.

But his seemingly foolproof plan probably didn't include beat constables because some constables were alert enough to hear the cries of the victim. Veena Gorawara (61), a retired officer from MTNL, is a resident of SFS Flats in Saket and was alone at the time of the incident.

“Kaushal identified himself as a representative of Vishal Mega Mart and said he had come to take an order of household articles. As soon as he entered the house he pulled out an air gun from his bag and asked her to hand over cash and jewellery. The victim started shouting. On hearing her cries, the beat constables reached the spot and with the help of one Badlu Khan, they nabbed Kaushal,” said a senior police officer.

The police later found a bottle of acid and red chilli powder from Kaushal’s bag. Kaushal lives with his wife and children and came from a prosperous background.
