An 18-year-old BTech first year student was shot dead allegedly by his jobless father in Rohini on Saturday.
According to police, Subhash Aggarwal, 52, killed Shubham after allegedly consuming alcohol because he was annoyed with him and the rest of his family, which used to insult him for his drinking habit and for being jobless.
The incident, which took place at their DDA flat in Rohini sector 18, was reported to the police control room at 1am.
Subhash allegedly used a licensed double-barrel gun to shoot his son, a Class 12 CBSE topper in his school who was studying in a private college in Alipur. Two bullets were fired and one hit Shubham in his upper abdomen, while the other one misfired.
Police said Subhash had come home drunk at 10.30pm on Friday. During dinner, Shubham and his two elder sisters taunted him for surviving on the earnings of his daughters.
“Aggarwal left his dinner midway and went to sleep. At 12.30am, he woke up, took out the gun from a box, went to his son’s room and fired at him,” a senior officer said.
The officer added that they received two calls to the police control room from the victim’s sister.
“A police team reached the spot and learnt that there were no signs of forced entry into the flat or a scuffle inside the room. The victim’s body was lying on the bed in a way it gave the impression that he was shot dead while sleeping,” the officer said.
Initially, the family members claimed Shubham had been murdered by unknown assailants. But when interrogated, Subhash confessed and the gun was recovered.
“Apart from earning for the family, the two daughters were taking care of Shubham’s education. Aggarwal used to ask for money to buy alcohol and that often led to quarrels at home,” said Vishnu Aggarwal, a neighbour.
