Justice Katju new chief of Press Council

Former Supreme Court judge, Justice Markandey Katju will be the new chairman of the Press Council of India (PCI), the apex media regulator of the country. He will succeed Justice GN Ray, whose term has come to an end.

Justice Katju, who retired from the Supreme Court on September 20 and is known for several landmark judgments, is likely to hold the post for the next five years, government sources said.

Contacted for his response, Justice Katju said he is yet to receive a formal communication from the government and he would comment only after being officially informed.

Justice Katju was first appointed a judge of the Allahabad high court in 1981 and served as the chief justice of Madras and Delhi high courts, before being elevated to the Supreme Court in April 2006.

Important judgments delivered by him include legalising passive euthanasia in India and granting bail to noted social activist Dr Binayak Sen.
