Once a jet-setting member of the DMK first family, Kanimozhi — chargesheeted in the 2G spectrum scam and remanded to judicial custody on Friday by a special court —was taken to Tihar Jail in a police van around 4.45pm.
Her husband, other family members and party colleagues — who were in their own cars -— followed her till the jail’s periphery.
“She looked morose, though composed, on arrival. Her husband G Aravindan and DMK MP TR Baalu met her in the jail,” said a jail source. Kanimozhi has been lodged in sub-jail number six in a single-occupancy cell, 15ft by 10 ft in size.
The cell has facilities like a 16-inch television set, a cot, bedsheets and mattresses, a ceiling fan, a compact fluorescent lamp bulb and a bathroom.
“She requested for home food but, as per rules, that can only be allowed twice a week,” said a jail source. “She is the first prominent female inmate lodged in the new cells of jail number six,” said a jail source.
Immediately after her arrival, female guards frisked the DMK’s Rajya Sabha MP.
Her belongings, including a few clothes and books — in English and Tamil, including fiction and non-fiction — were put through an X-ray machine, as a security precaution. Kanimozhi was interviewed about her personal particulars by jail warders who documented her replies.
She also underwent a mandatory medical examination by jail doctors.
At 7pm, she answered a call by a jail warder to step out of her living space to get “counted”. Kanimozhi will undergo the exercise again at 6am on Saturday. Like other high-profile inmates, she has been instructed to get an escort if she has to step outside her ward.
