Nine bike-borne assailants allegedly waylaid a 40-year-old garment trader's car and shot him before escaping with his bag containing Rs 3 lakh in central Delhi's Patel Nagar on Sunday night.
"The incident was reported at 12:30 a.m. and the victim has been identified as Mukesh Kumar, a resident of Ramesh Nagar," said a senior police officer from the district.
Police said Kumar was heading home in an Innova car with his friends Sunny Kalra and Virender Dutt when nine assailants, three on each motorcycle, intercepted the vehicle near the Delhi Metro's Patel Nagar station.
"The assailants smashed the car's rear windshield with a stone. When the vehicle's occupants stopped the car to see what had happened, the assailants attacked them," the officer said.
Kumar operates a garment store in Karol Bagh's Tank Road, police said.
"Brandishing a pistol, one of the assailants got down from his bike and asked the trio to step down from their vehicle. When they resisted, the assailant fired a shot at the windshield. The trio was then dragged out and ordered to hand over the bag containing the money," said the officer.
Police said the assailants shot Kumar in his right leg when he refused to do so.
"Kumar said that the bag contained his weekly earnings and the total amount carried in it was around Rs 3 lakh," the officer said.
He was rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and later shifted to Kalra Hospital.
"We were informed about the incident by Dutt and arrived on the scene as soon as possible. The trio's statements have been recorded and a case has been registered at the Patel Nagar Police Station," the officer added.
