Afghan President Hamid Karzai is learnt to have sought deeper defence ties with India when he met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday. This comes ahead of the withdrawal of Nato-led forces from Afghanistan in 2014. And this move could also upset
Pakistan and some analysts say Karzai would be using this as a pressure tactic on Islamabad.
Karzai also met President Pranab Mukherjee. On Monday, the Afghan president accepted an honorary degree from a university in Punjab. India already trains some Afghan military officers, but there has been little assistance in terms of military hardware.
Karzai’s spokesman had said that on this trip Afghanistan would seek “all kinds of assistance from India in order to strengthen our military and security institutions.”
When asked about Afghanistan Ambassador Shaida M Abdali to India’s demand for an enhanced bilateral defence cooperation and supply of lethal and non-lethal military equipment, the spokesperson said India was ready to discuss and consider Afghanistan’s request for arms supplies, as and when raised.
