A day after the appointment of Krishna Saini as Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) chairperson was revoked on the lieutenant governor’s orders, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal “cancelled” the same order issued by his own power department.

A furious Kejriwal on Saturday claimed the order was issued without keeping power minister Satyendar Jain in the loop . He slapped a show-cause notice on Sudhir Sharma, deputy secretary (power), for clearing the order.

Just when it was assumed that the three-month tussle over the DERC chief had come to an end, Kejriwal’s move is set to ignite a fresh face-off with the L-G.

Earlier, after many rounds of communication between the L-G office and the Delhi government over the appointment of the DERC chief, Najeeb Jung had for the third and final time rejected Saini’s appointment and asked the government to initiate a fresh process.

The file remained with the CM for nearly two weeks. Seeing no response, the L-G sent a separate note to the principal secretary (power), asking him to relieve Saini at the earliest.

Kejriwal said, “While I was going through the file, I got to know that on Thursday the power secretary got a call from the L-G office to cancel the appointment of Saini. When we got to know, power minister Satyendar Jain asked the secretary not to issue any order without his knowledge,” he added.

But the deputy secretary (power) issued the order on Friday. Soon after, another order was issued to remove power secretary Sukesh Jain, a close aide of Kejriwal. Varsha Joshi replaced him.

Kejriwal said a conspiracy was on to increase power tariff in Delhi. He said power companies are scared of the DERC chairperson appointed by the AAP government eight months ago.

“Krishna Saini had issued many orders which scared power companies. They did not like it and put pressure to remove Saini. We formed a selection committee in January and sent the information to the L-G. After shortlisting the names, the list was shared with the Delhi High Court. After selecting Saini, the L-G was informed but he did not say anything. After eight months, there is a conspiracy to cancel his appointment,” said Kejriwal.

The CM said that the BJP is trying to create a situation that will affect citizens of Delhi. “We have issued another order saying Saini will continue as DERC chief.”
