A trip to the Book Fair allegedly made a thief out of a mother of two and an alumnus of Delhi University’s Kamala Nehru College.
The Lodhi Colony Police have arrested a woman for allegedly stealing bags from various Party Halls at the India Habitat Centre (IHC) in the last few months.
Meena Sharma, the 38-year-old woman was arrested on Wednesday. Police said Sharma allegedly found an easy way of earning money after she went to a Book Fair at IHC.
They added that she otherwise comes from a well to do background and was working as a stenographer at a television channel in Okhla.
“It was just her love for buying expensive handbags and cosmetics which made a thief out of her and when she discovered it was easy to steal, she continued till she was arrested,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) HGS Dhaliwal.
Police said that in January 2010, she went to the Habitat Centre to visit the Book Fair, as she is fond of reading books.
“During her visit, During her visit she observed that affluent people visit the place and normally carry large amounts of cash and jewellery in their hand bags. She then picked up a bag from the Party Zone, Eatopia restaurant, in which she found some money and clothes for children. After that she continued lifting bags from the area,” added Dhaliwal.
Police said Sharma had she completed vocational courses in Stenography and Computer Graphics from YWCA.
They added that she is fluent in English and also worked as a Hindi to English translator. Police said that she allegedly lifted any bag she found lying unattended and quickly took out cash and other valuables from it.
“She first visited the Sai Baba Temple in Lodhi Colony for obeisance and then straightway went to Party Zone. A guard at IHC got suspicious when he found one woman carrying three handbags. He called the policemen on duty nearby and Sharma was intercepted,” added Dhaliwal.
Police said Meena married Mahesh Sharma, a small-time businessman dealing in sale-purchase of food articles in 1992.
She resided along with her family in a rented house in Sriniwas Puri area.
