Last year’s developments have Congress worried

The going looks tough for Congress in Vishwas Nagar. Although the party won the last two Assembly elections comfortably, it suffered defeat in all four municipal wards of the constituency during the 2007 municipal polls.

To avoid a repeat of last year’s drubbing in Saturday’s Assembly election, sitting MLA Naseeb Singh is playing the development card. “Sealing was the main issue in the municipal elections. The councillors had also failed to discharge their duties and people were really unhappy with them. But this time, development is the key issue and people are aware of the work done by the Congress government in the last 10 years,” said Singh.

While Congressman Singh will be looking forward to his third consecutive term as MLA, BJP’s Om Prakash Sharma has the ‘outsider’ tag to worry about.

“Sharma knows nothing about the local problems. He has always worked in the Chandni Chowk area and lived in Civil Lines,” said KD Bhargava, a resident of IP Extension. Sharma is also the political advisor to BJP General Secretary Arun Jaitley.

Singh might bank on Congress’ development record but his electorate does not sound too happy. “He did absolutely nothing for Patparganj Industrial Area in 10 years. The area is reeling under a water crisis and the roads are in a bad shape. When Singh refused to help us out, we had to seek the Lieutenant Governor’s intervention,” said SK Maheshwari of Functional Industrial Estate, Patparganj.

The assembly segment includes some posh localities of east Delhi like Preet Vihar, Swasthya Vihar, Anand Vihar and Pushpanjali. Some housing societies of IP Extension and middle class colonies like Vishwas Nagar and East Guru Angad Nagar are also included.
