Two men and a female lawyer from the northeast were allegedly beaten and the woman molested by a group of lawyers in the Tis Hazari court complex in Delhi on Friday. Eyewitnesses claimed that one of the victims was beaten up in front of the judge.

What sparked the incident was the molestation of another girl from the community by an advocate a day before. The victim along with other social activists had come to file a report against the accused lawyer. While the process was on, eyewitnesses claim that around 70 lawyers barged into the court room and tore the police files.

“The group beat up one of us in front of the judge and they were constantly hurling abuses at us,” said Bruce, a social worker who was present at the court when the violence erupted.

Around 4:30pm, three of the activists including a female lawyer practicing at the Saket court, were followed allegedly by the same crowd.

“I thought that since I was a co-worker, they may not hurt me. So I asked the other two to escape while I took another route. After chasing me for some minutes, they slapped me and threatened to molest me if I pursued the case further. I was rescued by the police and brought to the police station,” said Noshi, one of the victims.

Noshi and other members of the northeastern community present at the spot alleged that it was a racist attack. “We have received the complaint of a northeastern lawyer along with two others being attacked. We are yet to confirm if it was a hate crime,” said Sindhu Pillai, DCP (north).

Social activists and members of the community gathered outside the Sabzi Mandi police station around 7pm on Friday to protest against the rising crimes against members of the community.
