A lawyers' body on Thursday decided to observe one-day token strike in all the six district courts on Friday to protest the arrest of Anna Hazare and non-inclusion of judiciary in the lokpal bill.
The Co-ordination Committee of All Bar Associations of Delhi, in its release, strongly condemned the government's act in arresting Hazare, saying it was done to curtail his fundamental right to protest against rampant corruption.
"The said act of the government has given clear message to the citizens that the government is not interested to take measures to minimize corruption at the top level. Anna Hazare is not fighting for himself but for the whole society," Rajeev Khosla, spokesperson of the committee, said.
He said that the government should at least hear Hazare's grievances on the lokpal bill.
"The lawyers of the country strongly feel that Government cannot subvert the provisions of the Constitution by making arrest of those who in fact are working in the interest of the nation as well as the whole society," the committee said.
The lawyers' body said that they are also amazed by the statement of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh regarding exclusion of judiciary from the ambit of lokpal bill.
"The lokpal bill being introduced is nothing but an eye-wash as all those who matter in running of administration and judicial wing of the government have been left," it said.
"The lawyers of Delhi have decided to observe one day token strike on August 17 to protest against the said arrest and would also hold peaceful demonstrations in all district court complexes," the lawyers' body said.
The committee supported Hazare saying he is fully justified in putting forth his demand through peaceful means under the Constitution.
