It was only after they nailed Laxmi’s lie that the police were able to trace the biological mother of the two-year-old battered baby.

Munni, who police claim, is the mother of the baby, was traced to a village in Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu on Sunday and was brought to the Capital on Monday morning.

Though Laxmi, who was detained in the case more than 10 days ago, tried to mislead the police by her false statements, her sustained interrogation supported with corroborative evidence, helped investigators trace Munni.

“From day one she kept misleading us by cooking up stories. As per her initial claims, Munni had come to her house with the baby saying she was a widow and was looking for a job as a maid. But our investigation revealed that Munni was not a widow and hails from Muzaffarpur in Bihar,” said a senior investigating officer.

“A team was sent to Muzaffarpur. It found Munni’s house and from there learnt that she had gone to Delhi with her three children to meet one Laxmi,” said the officer.

“Laxmi’s antecedents were verified and she was found to be a part of a human trafficking racket. We confronted her with these evidences and she eventually broke down and admitted of tricking Munni into remarriage in Rajasthan,” the officer said, adding that Laxmi’s aides Kanta Choudhary and Saroj were also members of the same racket.

While Laxmi and Kanta have been arrested, police efforts are on to nab Saroj. Further investigations are in progress.
