High drama was witnessed at the headquarters of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Tuesday when a councillor climbed atop the terrace of the Town Hall building and started shouting slogans.
Preeti, the councillor who goes by only one name, was protesting against the civic agency not giving proper uniforms to women sanitation workers.
The councillor was carrying a mannequin clothed in blouse and a petticoat to drive home her point on women workers not getting sarees in uniform. The Congress councillor claimed that when she tried to raise the issue at a meeting of the MCD, she was not allowed to speak.
She alleged that MCD’s deputy chairman Rajesh Gehlot, who was presiding over the session, did not allow her to speak. Her protest went out for about an hour before Gehlot assured that he would look into her demands. Gehlot was presiding over the meeting as Mayor P.R. Sawhney is on a visit abroad.
Preeti said, “The MCD has not distributed sarees but only the items that accompany a saree. This is shameful.”
