‘Lodge FIR on Zee editor’s complaint’

delhi Updated: Mar 19, 2013 01:11 IST

A court on Monday ordered the lodging of an FIR against unnamed persons on a complaint filed by Zee News editor Sudhir Chaudhary who alleged "nasty" tweets were being posted on his social networking site after an extortion case was registered against him.

Metropolitan Magistrate (MM) Vijeta Singh directed the DCP of the Economic Offence Wing (EOW) of the Delhi Police to lodge an FIR against unnamed persons and also directed him to file a status report before it on April 18.

"This court is satisfied that the complainant (Chaudhary) had disclosed commission of cognisable offences and does not have the means to collect the evidence. Hence, it is ordered that FIR under relevant sections be registered by the DCP, EOW, against unknown persons," the court said.

"It shall be ensured that no arrests are made without reasonable cause. Copy of the order be sent to DCP, EOW for due compliance and filing of status report on April 18, 2013," the court said.

Chaudhary had alleged that "due to nasty tweets, a hostile atmosphere has been created" for him in his "personal and professional life" and has also misled his genuine followers who are following him on Twitter.

He had also argued that his grievances were not redressed despite complaints to the crime branch, cyber cell and ACP of the EOW cell of the Delhi Police.

The EOW cell, however, had opposed his plea saying the complaint was filed by Chaudhary with an "ulterior motive to create new defences" in the FIR registered against him in the case relating to alleged extortion.
