Locating parking space in the Capital is now just an SMS away.
According to the new parking policy formulated by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), drivers can find out details of available parking space just by sending a text message. The civic body is hoping that such a scheme would help ease traffic congestion in the city.
“All the people who will register with us for paying parking charges on a yearly basis will be given certain value added service. The SMS service is part of that scheme”, said a senior MCD official.
Doing away with the current parking attendants too, the consortium that would manage the parking lots will hire ex-servicemen as parking attendants.
In busy areas, where creating parking space is not feasible, the civic body would install parking meters through which a slip would be issued that the person would have to stick on the vehicle.
“In busy market areas people park their vehicles for free. To keep a check on such vehicles, we would install such meters. Vehicles of those who do not use the service will be towed away,” added the official.
To encourage people to use the yearly mode of paying parking charges the consortium would also give free car washing to the owners too.
People would also be able to pay their property tax at these parking lots.“We are trying to tie up with the Delhi government so that other services can be made available at the parking lots such as paying electricity bill, ordering for LPG gas, among others”, said the official.
The MCD would either pay a set amount of money to the consortium or they may go for revenue sharing. The civic body is also planning to allow the use of smart card at the multi-level car parking lots too.
