A couple in their mid-20s attempted suicide by consuming sedatives in north Delhi's Bonta Park near Delhi University's North Campus on Monday afternoon. The couple was depressed as their families had arranged them to get married to different people against their wish, police said.
The couple has been identified as Poonam, 25, and her boyfriend Praveen Kumar. Both are residents of Madipur area in west Delhi.
The police recovered a suicide note from Kumar's possession which read that they loved each other and were taking the extreme step as their families didn't approve of their relationship.
The suicide note, seemingly written by Kumar, also asked his parents to perform their last rites as husband and wife, a senior police officer said. The family members of the duo have been informed about the incident.
The officer added that the incident came to light after one Sumit, who was walking in the park, found the couple unconscious with froth coming out of their mouths.
"Sumit immediately made a call to the police control room. A PCR van reached the spot and rushed the two to Bara Hindu Rao hospital from where they were shifted to a private hospital. The condition of the couple was stated to be stable," said the senior officer.
Kumar, who has a diploma from industrial training institute (ITI), is preparing for staff selection commission (SSC) entrance examination while Poonam is pursuing a B.Ed course from a private institute in Sultanpuri in outer Delhi.
