Geeta Sharma, the lover of special cell inspector Badrish Dutt, had developed an intimate relationship with him after deceiving the police officer into believing that his wife was cheating on him, an informal investigation into the mysterious death of the duo has revealed.

Ironically, Sharma could achieve this dubious feat only after a suspicious and desperate Dutt approached her to assess the state of his seemingly failing marriage to the mother of his two daughters, highly placed sources claimed on Wednesday.

The informal investigation was carried out by the special cell, to which Dutt was attached as a technical surveillance expert.

"Dutt had been introduced to Geeta in the year 2007," said an officer.

"The introduction had been through a colleague tasked with keeping an informal check on private investigators operating in the Capital."

Considered a 'secretive introvert' by his colleagues at the Delhi police's anti-terror wing, long spells away from his Faridabad-based family had evidently begun to show on his face.

Adept at his job, a nervous and distrustful Dutt had responded to his curiosity by subtly generating his wife's mobile call detail records (CDRs) to interpret her infidelity.

His wife, however, had somehow been able to find out, leading to a bitter altercation between them.

"That's when he realised that he couldn't stick his neck out while spying on his wife and asked one of his colleagues to get him in touch with 'someone good at matrimonial cases' like his," the officer said.

"He ended-up being introduced to Sharma who assured him that she would get to the bottom of it. But to her, Dutt wasn't just like any other client. She realised she could put him to use for her own professional gain by playing on his insecurity," said the officer.

Sources in the special cell claimed they had reason to believe that the fatal argument between the couple on the fateful night of their deaths was triggered both by the guilt of having been fooled into suspecting his innocent wife's intentions as well as her recent arrest by the crime branch.

Dutt and his live-in partner, Geeta Sharma, were found dead at the latter's rented flat in Gurgaon's Sector 52 last Saturday morning.
