The CBI probe into the murder of Jodhpur nurse Bhanwari Devi has revealed that former Rajasthan minister Mahipal Maderna, who has been accused in the case, promised co-accused Bishnaram Bishnoi to get around 40 criminal cases lodged by the state police against him quashed.

“Maderna and his accomplices had also promised Bishnaram lakhs of Rupees to dispose of Bhanwari’s body...,” said a CBI source, adding “Bishnaram had completely confessed to his role in the crime and we will use his statement in the case’s supplementary chargesheet that will be filed in a few weeks.”

The gang led by Bishnaram, a history-sheeter, had allegedly burnt Bhanwari’s body at a place in rural Jodhpur and then dumped the remains in the Rajiv Gandhi canal. On September 1, Bhanwari was allegedly abducted and then strangulated by another gang—comprising arrested accused Sahabuddin, Sohanlal Bishnoi and Baldev—allegedly hired by Maderna. The body was later handed over to Bishnaram and his two accomplices Kailash Jakhad and Om Prakash.

The CBI has so far recovered a portion of the skull, a set of teeth, and a watch which are suspected to belong to Bhanwari. They have been sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory in Delhi for tests.

The agency’s probe, said the source, has established that Bhanwari was murdered in course of a conspiracy allegedly hatched by Maderna and Luni legislator Malkhan Singh.

“Bhanwari had made a sex video featuring her and Maderna, and then her and Malkhan, to extort money from them and also to ensure they did not harm her,” said the source.
