A 38-year-old maid was Thursday found dead under mysterious circumstances at her employer's south Delhi house, police said while her family alleged she was raped and murdered.
The angry family members and their neighbours pelted stones at her employer's house. Police said they were waiting for the post-mortem examination report to confirm if the maid was sexually assaulted and murdered.
Archna Das, who stayed in Gokulpuri Extension, was found dead in the servant quarters of noted painter Subroto Kundu's Chittaranjan Park residence. Das worked as a part time maid at Kundu's house.
Kundu's permanent maid Jamuna tried to wake up Das around 8 a.m., police said. When she did not get any response, Jamuna informed Kundu's wife Nupur. Police and Das' family were informed.
Das, who came in the mornings and evenings to work in the house, had apparently overstayed Wednesday at the servant quarters.
Police took Das' body to the mortuary of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for autopsy.
"The preliminary report suggests that there was no external injury on her body. But we are waiting for the post-mortem excamination report before taking any action," said an investigating officer.
Police also refused to comment whether Das had committed suicide.
However, the deceased's family members and neigbours alleged that Das was raped and murdered in her employer's house. Around 200 of them threw stones at Kundu's house.
"I called up the Kundus when my mother did not return till late (Wednesday). They said my mother had left long time back. But next morning they called up to say that my mother has been lying dead in their house," the maid's son Sudeep Das said.
"We want a case of rape and murder to be registered," he said.
